Is the payout difference between the two all THAT much? I spoke with guy today who claims to have won the MIM and some KCBS comps. He has recently taken over a little road side BBQ stand here in Destin. Seemd like a nice enough guy but kind of talked down about the payout in FBA comps. On average,is it that much different?

Well there are a couple of big contests like MIM, AR, etc that do outdo FBA but most of the contests are on par w/ each other. Due to FBA being somewhat new compared to MIM/KCBS there's not a big FBA contest w/ all the sponsors & such like MIM, AR, Jack etc that's developed yet but will in time.

The discussions around payouts can/will get skewed when someone talks about MIM (huge sponsor $$$ = big payout to winners and grand champ). The same is probably true for the American Royal (open & invitational) and the Jack.

The average KCBS or FBA competition will have similar payouts. The rare contest will pay as deep as 10 places in category and more than two places for overall. Ultimately the payout is determined by the number of teams competing and how much money the contest has to work with (dependant upon event sponsors more than entry fees collected)

The payouts in the MBN contests are not really any better than the KCBS/FBA contests. There is a larger investment in the cost to compete for the MBN because of the quantity of meat required for the judging process. So the return on investment is lower (in theory).

I think proportionally the FBA payouts are as good as kcbs - don't know about MIM. I know Dothan and Tallahassee both have a nice payout schedule.

I'm lovin that Perry payout!

I would love to see more contests get sponsorship money. We cooked the Boss Hog Cookoff in Waynesboro, GA and they had $10,000 prize money and only 30 teams. More prize money than entry fee money, but they made it up by having a large amount of sponsorship.

Heck I've even cooked a local non-sanctioned contest called the Best Meat in the Street and they paid almost twice the amount of prize money versus entry fees....and they even provided ALL 4 categories of meats (chicken, ribs, pork, and brisket).

I know putting together a bbq contest requires lots of time and money. I'm thankful we have so many contests to choose from, but I would like to see the sanctioning bodies set some guidelines on prize money versus entry fee money....or do they already have this?

I know from working with the FBA to get the Valley contest set up that they have some suggested prize structures, but the bottom line comes down to the amount of sponsorship money. In today's economic climate, getting sponsors can be difficult, but it can be done.

GOOD POINT HOOCH,IT ALL COMES DOWN TO SPONSORSHIP,IVE ONLY COOKED 2 PRO CONTEST 1 KCBS AND 1 FBA.THE KCBS CONTEST PAID OUT THROUGH THE TOP TEN IN ALL 4 MEATS AND THE TOP 3 OVERALL.THE FBA PAID THE TOP 5 AND THE TOP 2 OVERALL BUT I'LL TAKE FBA OVER KCBS ANY DAY CAUSE MONEY AINT GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH WHY WE COMPETE

Once you start doing 10-12 Pro events a year, money does have something to do with it. It is nice to at least recoup something to offset the expense of competition. It is is not the only thing I consider, but it plays into it now more than ever with gas and meat costs way up.

If I want to just come for the party, I will stay home and invite friends over for much less.

I know what you mean L & H....a fellow competitor said something to me this weekend about the fact that I don't drink at all...the only time we see each other is at a contest. I told him that I do in fact love beer...but if he ever sees me drinking at a contest he better get a picture. I can party at the house...I'm at the contest for something else.
