First off, great site you guys have here. Really informative on all brands of pits and a good read before starting work in the morning.
I have been cooking for a long time and am ready to try my hand at smoking. Been doing plenty of research and know all about Klose, Lang, etc. I read some earlier posts about the Longhorn and was curious. I saw this pit at Academy Sports for $400 and was wondering if this was a good buy. Seems like a heavy gauge pit and looks well sealed. I will likely add a deflector to the chamber, but other than that, it looks good. Anyone have any experiences with this pit, good or bad? Thanks in advance for the info. |

Nick, Go for it, The Longhorn is a nice smoker, I was at a BBQ party last year and the guy who was putting on the party had one. He cooked 12 huge butts on this thing. If I remember right I think he said he paid about a $1000.00 for it. Made me green with envy. That was the very smoker that got me intrested in buying one for myslef. I have a Sliver,. will not hold as much but cooks just as good. Sounds like 400 is a good deal. If I could find one for 400.00 it would be in my garage at this time.

| Thanks George, I really appreciate the response. Yeah, it looks like a pretty solid smoker that can accomodate my cooking needs (sometimes cook for 50-75 people)and is not going to cost an arm and a leg. |

Can someone tell me the difference between the NB Longhorn smoker and the Brinkman Longhorn smoker? Looks like it is the size of the wheels and about $600 more for the Brinkman.
Thanks in advance.

BB, I have been wanting to know the same thing. I did purchase the Longhorn from Academy Sports and love it. It is a very heavy duty smoker. I drove 200 miles to get mine and it took 5 men to put it in the back of my truck. If you want to check out some pics go here"

Was anyone ever able to tell if there is a difference between the Brinkman Longhorn and the NB Longhorn?
Also, Does anyone know if Acadamy would do a phone order and ship it to Minnesota? Not many good places to buy Smokers up here besides my Silver...which has seen the end of it's usefull life. |

MAYBE I can shed SOME light on the topic. The folks at Oklahoma Joe's first made the "Longhorn Smoker". They contracted to sell some of them to (or through) Sam's Club for a while. These were really great smokers, but were of 3/16 inch steel. At the same time, the Longhorn smokers sold directly by Oklahoma Joe's were of 1/4 inch steel. I was fortunate enough to find one of the Oklahoma Joe Longhorns at Sam's Club about 7 years ago that got dinged a bit at the store, and got it for around $250 out the door. The dings were quite minor (only chipped paint!!). That smoker has been great for me. I decided about 18 months ago that I needed a baffle between the firebox and the smoking chamber, so I called Oklahoma Joes. They told me the story then. Apparently, they sold out to New Brounfel's, and couldn't compete head on for a while. The brother of the original owner of Oklahoma Joe's went back into the smoker business, and sold them through the following outlet: http://mobbq.com/ Then I don't know if Brinkman bought out New Braunfel's or what, but NOW the same smokers that are offered at Missouri BBQ (as listed above), again out of 1/4 inch steel, but are from what I gather, under the Brinkman name. Either way, these are (in my opinion) a great bargain at the price you are quoting. I don't know how they can even sell them for that price (if they are the 3/16 inch or 1/4 inch steel) with steel prices where they are. Let us know how thick the steel is. As I said, mine is the 3/16 inch steel, and it is great. If you want any additional information, call Rick at Missouri BBQ and he will fill you in. He is GREAT to do business with........ honest and straightforward. Really nice guy. I hope this might help some. Best of luck, Jeffro |

ChuckD, I viewed the pics you posted, and your Oklahoma Joe appears identical to mine...... even the wheels are the same. How thick is the steel on your's? I agree with you whole-heartedly....... I think it is the best bargain out there for the money for a HEAVY steel smoker. When I first saw them at Sam's Club, I believe they were like $495 or $450, and I fell in love with them, but just wouldn't spend that much (I wasn't as into smoking then as now!!). After I got mine at the reduced price because of the dinged paint, and used it for a while, I realized it would have been well-worth the full price. Keep on smokin', buddy!!! Best, Jeffro |

| If you go to Academy Sports & Outdoors website (http://academy.com/), under the Grills section, they list the New Braunfels Longhorn smoker there. A little confusing because they supposedly don't exist anymore, but they list them for $399. And they say that they are the 1/4" steel. I am calling tomorrow to see what it would cost to ship one to Minnesota. |

MN Smoker, I called The Academy Store in Little Rock, Arkansas, and they do in fact have this unit for $399. I asked him about shipping to St. Louis since Little Rock is the closest Academy to me, and he said that their Academy does NOT ship the heavy smokers out of state. I inquired, and he said he didn't know if the other Academy Stores shipped out of state. I would say THAT smoker at THAT price would be worth it even if you had to drive a few hours each way to pick it up. It just blows my mind that they sell that unit for $399. It is a REAL STEAL at that price. It HAS to be the best bargain out there. Let us know what you find out. As you probably know by now, Academy's website has a map of their stores throughout the south, so might be worth checking out. Good luck. Jeffro |

To throw in my two cents-- I bought a longhorn from Academy about 2 months ago. It cost 399, and has the Oklahoma Joe's Plate on it, and is 3/16 thick. It is a great smoker, and I have already done some great work with it. As for any modifications that you might want, Roger @ Horizon Smokers use to build them for Oklahoma Joes, and he custimize many parts for you at an incredible price. I bought a deflector plate from him, for about $30, and then he made a new thicker, higher fire box grate for me.
Well thats my two cents, BK |

Jeffro,
I think that I got his info from a previous post of yours. I talked to him and he is incredibly helpful. I forgot to mention that the firebox was $25 or so, and he made it to my size specifications, I also bought a clean-up tool for like $15 that is built with the same curves as my smoker to remove all the ashes from my fire box. J- Thanks for pointing me to him. It saved me some time and money.
