Greetings all!

I'm Gowan Fenley of Cartersville, Georgia.

Small business owner and IT guy by trade, barbecue man by calling for the last couple decades. I'm coming up on that 50 years benchmark faster than I'd like. My walk-away wife has been in the process of divorcing me for over a year. Our teenage daughter splits her time between home and her mother's place.

I'm a member of KCBS and FBA. I cook with the Johnny Mitchell's Smokehouse team as well as judge a few shows each year. Since 2006 I've been involved as one of the organizers of The Georgia Barbecue Classic in one role or another. Between my teammates Johnny, Warren and myself we've owned at least one of every kind of smoker made with the exception of a pellet pooper. The current fleet consists of around a dozen cookers, but we always seem to be looking for another to try...

Years ago I decided to combine my interests in history and barbecue in a line of hand-made sauces. I don't sell them commercially, but you can read more about them here: CivilWarBBQ.com. If you spot a guy at a contest wearing a chef's coat turned Civil War uniform that's me. Come up and say hi!

Where are you from? I'm not from around here, although it seems as though I've been here my entire life.
What do you do? Far too much some days, never enough on others, but I never miss a sunrise.
How long have you been cooking? Since I realized my mother didn't have the necessary skills.
How old are you? Old enough not to care about my age anymore.
And anything else you wouldn't mind sharing? I still can't thread a needle and even though I can take apart a computer and put it back together, the VCR in my livingroom always says 12:00.

My name is Rick and I am a Californian now living in Yorktown, VA. I am an ex-Coast Guard swimmer(are you really ever an ex-Coastie?) and have been with a major tech company for the last 10+ years. I started out boiling ribs and then throwing them on the grill with some bbq sauce and was quite proud of myself. I then moved on to gassers and then to WSM's/OTG and am now anxiously awaiting my new smoker. I have been married 16 years to a wonderful woman who allows me to induldge in such things as buying smokers. We have a 11yo son and I am very excited about him being more involved with the bbq events.

I got into the competitive thing last year and have not had a single box dq'd or made anyone sick (again...quite proud of myself). I look forward to 8 or so contests this year. I am definately looking foward to meeting more of you and learning from you.
