Did I ever stumble across a great place on Saturday. Lange's Old Fashioned Meat Market in Michigan City Indiana. "Authentic yesteryear atmosphere, saw-dust on the floor, and a character behind the counter."
Billy, I don't know if you know Peter Lange, but think this guy might have just about as many stories as you do.
Sells prime and choice beef - much of it 28 day aged. Had approximately 1 1/2" thick slices of aged prime rib on the bone. I was afraid to ask about price - I had already done enough damage for 1 day. Both his fresh and aged steaks looked great.
Bought 2 sticks of beef jerky, 2 sticks of pork jerky, 2 smoked turkey breasts, a lb. of sliced dry cured roast beef, and 8 links of a sausage he had just made and smoked. He told me to take a link and hang it for a month to let it dry and take another link and hang it for a year. Said I'd be amazed at how much the flavor profile will change and become better. Think I'm going to hang 4 - 1 for a month, 1 for 3 months, 1 for 6 months, and 1 for a year. Also bought a pint of his own fresh ground horseradish and a pint of his Belgian Mustard.
Very good stuff. If you ever get anywhere near Michigan City, this place is definitely worth checking out.

Not going to go hungry or have to eat fast food when road tripping through Indiana. Forget the name of it, think it's at 220 M.M. on I65, you can't miss it - signs for miles, working dairy that's turned into a regular tourist thing, but they make and sell award winning cheeses and ice cream. Best butter pecan ice cream that I've ever had. Going to Indy in a couple of weeks - going to stop on the way down and on the way back.

Think I know the place you're refering to - over by Shipshewana. Been years since I've been over that way. Think the dairy is called Fair Oaks and it's down around the 220 M.M. just off of I65. You'll see signs for it for several miles before you get to it and can't miss it - it's just right off of the exit. I'm going that way in 2 weeks - I'll let you know for sure when I get back.
