The Shed wins ‘Live’ Grilling Contest

Brad Orrison of The Shed leaps up to take the title of Ultimate Hometown Griller

Brad Orrison jumped for joy when his name was announced as the winner of the “Ultimate Hometown Grill Off” on “Live with Regis and Kelly” Friday, August 21st.

The syndicated talk show’s summer grilling contest pitted The Shed’s pulled pork sandwich against Jim Monroe’s Eureka Burger from The Cutting Board in Eureka, Montana.

Brad and Monroe earned spots in the finals by virtue of popular voting on the “Regis and Kelly” web site, but a panel of four judges determined the winner in side-by-side tasting aired on Friday’s show.

“We are literally so excited and I’ve had a blast hanging out with my sister Brooke in New York,” Brad said.  Brooke was behind the scenes the whole time, toasting the buns, pulling the pork, and reminding Brad to breathe.  “It was a true team effort” Brad said “I couldn’t have done it without her.”

The judges were show producer Michael Gilman; Kenny Calagan, executive pitmaster of New York's Blue Smoke and founder of the "Big Apple BBQ Block Party"; “Love Chef” Francis Anthony; and Nancy Hopkins, the Better Homes and Gardens deputy editor for food and entertaining.

As finalists, Orrison and Monroe won $2,000 in kitchen appliances from Krupps.  The Shed will be featured in the March 2010 issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine.

During the judges’ comments, Anthony told viewers that “this restaurant is a destination place” in praising The Shed’s pulled pork sandwich and accompanying coleslaw that Brad said was his father’s recipe.

“When I heard the judges’ comments, I had a good feeling, but I was shaking right up to the minute they made the announcement and then shook some more!” Brooke commented. “The whole reason we were able to do this is because of our Shed Crew. We are so proud of them and proud to be able to represent the Mississippi Gulf Coast.”

Their Mother, Linda commented, “I thought Memphis in May was nerve-racking…this has been going on for two months. Warning: having children can be hazardous to your health!”
