BBQ sauce proceeds donated to help wounded service members
Hobie J Gourmet Sauces has a BBQ sauce that comes in three different flavors (sweet, spicy and hot & spicy). We have dedicated and made this sauce available to the American Legion National for sale to raise money for our troops. This is one of the only license agreements the American Legion has ever given out for a food product since they started in 1919.
Heroes to Hometowns is a program that the Department of Defense put together to assist severely wounded service members when they return home. They have asked the American Legion to oversee this program.
In November of 2008, Heroes to Hometowns BBQ sauce was born. The Heroes to Hometowns BBQ sauce’s first recipient was Staff Sgt. Jose Pequeño in Tampa, Florida. Jose was severely wounded in Iraq in 2006 when a hand grenade was launched into his humvee. The left side of his body was injured by shrapnel and the impact caused him to lose 50% of his brain mass. After several years of being in numerous VA hospitals, Jose needed to be put into an environment to allow his body to be infection free for a minimum of one year.
Through the sale of the sauce, the assistance of the Department of Florida American Legion members and local vendors, over $70,000 was raised to do renovations on a house making it handicap accessible for him. On December 19th, escorted by over 200 US veteran motorcyclists, Jose was released from the hospital and moved into the newly renovated home with his mother and sister.
So far, Jose has been infection free and tentatively scheduled for surgery on the left side of his head later this year. Doctors say if the surgery is successful, he could possibly be able to talk and have use of his hands again. In the meantime, Jose is doing well and was the feature story at this year’s Memorial Day concert in Washington, DC, on the Capitol lawn.
