Gunter Wilhelm® Knows BBQ & Grilling

BBQ Product Review from NBN Cooking Crew

GunterWilhelmreview2Barbecue folks can be very picky people when it comes to the tools with which they choose to play. Certain style grills or pits, wireless digital thermometers, and lump charcoal are just a few things that can get this crowd to start voicing their opinions. We don’t think it is as much superstition to the pitmasters as much as it is the familiarity of these chosen brands and products. Personally, we are always looking to find the next great tool or gadget that will increase our barbecue output and make our end product better than ever. Making the process easier is also something we love to find, and everyone knows that a great knife can make or break any cook.

Our mentors taught us some valuable lessons, but none more valuable than the meaning of working smarter instead of harder. A cheap or dull set of knives can indeed make you work twice or three times as hard and can also be dangerous. Have you ever scrape the backside of chicken skin with a dull blade? It takes a lot longer with a dull knife. Sometimes you may not notice the extra work, but if you are prepping 100 chicken thighs, then you can cut that time in half with the right tool.

Gunter Wilhelm® understands this concept very well, and that is why this company started back in 2002. The mission was to design, manufacture and market outstanding and high-quality knives at an affordable price. They actually interviewed professional chefs in the New York City area to get their thoughts on the perfect knife. After much R&D and many prototypes, they created their Executive Chef Series of knives. That series started their business, and today they are introducing their Lighting Pro Cut line.

The Lighting Pro Cut line is perfect for the weekend backyard grill master or weekend competition warrior. This line is the most cost-effective we have seen on the market today that features the high carbon German steel. This type of steel is found in just about every other high-quality knife in the culinary world and can cost upwards of 10 times as much. The Lightning series handles are textured for a better and safer grip and made with antibacterial material for healthy and safer cooking. The blades are controlled multi-stage heat treated, and ice hardened to help make the knife durable and flexible at the same time.

Our test set included a 12’ slicer knife that sales online for $55, a 10” filet knife that sales for $50, a 6” boning knife that sales for $35 and GunterWilhelmreview1our favorite of the entire set is the 8” chef knife that sales for $45. They also sent us a nice sharpening steel, set of knife guards and a very nice chef’s bag to keep the set safe and sound while being stored. We ran out test set of knives through a pretty good test and found they easily handled each task. After about two solid weeks of using them on a daily basis, we have not found the need to pull out the sharpening steel once for any knife. Our favorite 8” chef knife has really impressed us as we have used and washed it a ton and it shows no wear effects at all.

Overall we are overly impressed with the performance of these knives. The most impressive fact about the entire line of Gunter Wilhelm® cutlery is that they all use the same exact high carbon steel for every series of knives they make. That gives us a great feeling knowing that our knives will withstand the everyday use as well as the other and more expensive series of knives they produce.

You can find out more about the exceptional knives, and the entire collection of cutlery, from the Gunter Wilhelm® website at www.GunterWilhelm.com or by calling them at 201-569-6866. You can also stop in their brand new showroom and retail store located at 628 Swan Street in Ramsey, New Jersey.
